Explanation of Course Numbers
Hill College has joined with other junior/community colleges and universities in the State
of Texas and has adopted the Texas Common Course Numbering System (TCCN). The
purpose of the new numbering system is to improve articulation and assist students who
are transferring between participating institutions.
Each course is designated by a department title and a four digit number. The first of the
four digits identifies the academic level of the course. Freshman or first year courses are
designated by a "1", whereas sophomore or second year courses, "2". The second digit
specifies the number of semester credit hours awarded for the completion of the course.
The third and fourth digits distinguish the course within a program area. For example,
ENGL 1301 would be a three semester credit English course normally taken during the
freshman year.
