Lady Rebel Volleyball Opens Practice for 2012

Lady Rebel Volleyball Opens Practice for 2012The Hill College volleyball team began practice for the 2012 season on Wednesday morning. The Lady Rebels finished the 2011 season with a 15-24 record and tied for second in conference with a 5-5 record.

This year’s squad will be anchored by four returning sophomores including the team’s top three leaders in kills: Phyllicia Cross (367), Camryn Kazmierski (298) and Cayleigh Drake (294). With so much offense returning, it’s no surprise what Drake had to say when asked how she felt about the upcoming season.

“We’re confident about this season,” Drake said. “We have been working hard in the offseason to stay in shape, and we ask that the community come and watch some good volleyball play.”

Impact newcomers includes sophomore transfer Rebecca Moustapha from Houston. The 6’3 middle blocker had 187 kills and 43 blocks as a freshman at Frank Phillips College in 2011. Freshman right-side hitter Tammy Leranth is a 6’1 lefty that brings height and athleticism to the 2012 squad.

“This year we will be more athletic, physical and have height (four players 6’0 or taller) that we haven’t had in previous years,” said third-year Head Coach Jeremiah Tiffin. “We have upgraded many positions, and as long as we pass and play defense, we will be successful.”

The Lady Rebels will open their season in the Lady Bears Invitational Aug. 24-25, at Brookhaven College in Dallas. Their first home game will be against perennial powerhouse Blinn College at 6 p.m, Aug. 28.
