The Hill College Runnin' Rebels and Lady Rebels played their first conference home games over the weekend against Ranger College at the Bob Bullock Sports Center. The Lady Rebels won 58-41 to improve to 1-1 in conference play while the Runnin' Rebels lost 72-60 to fall to 0-2 in conference.
In the Lady Rebels game, both teams got off to a slow start shooting the ball, but Hill College had a 23-20 lead at the half. The Lady Rebels increased the lead to seven midway through the second half at 39-32 and extended it to 49-37 with under seven minutes remaining. Their largest lead of 19 points came at the 2:30 mark before finishing the game with a 17-point victory.
The Lady Rebels were led by sophomore Kenyadah Hopkins who had 13 points and 19 rebounds. Sophomore Ashley Villarreal and freshman Mandy Burson each had 12 points to help contribute to the victory.
"When your leading scorer (Dysyan Malone-17 ppg) only scores six and you when by 17, it shows good team effort," said Head Coach Aaron Kallhoff.
The Rebels once again got off to a slow start as they only managed nine points in the first 10 minutes of play. Their deficit to the Rangers was nine at the 4:04 mark and finished the half down by 10, 32-22. The Rangers extended the lead early in the second half to 17 before the Rebels went on a run to close the gap to eight points with five minutes to play. That would be as close as they would get as the Rangers hit their free throws and made some timely three-point baskets.
The Rebels were led by freshman Dwight Gist with 16 points and sophomore Kerry Jones who had 14 points.
The next home game for both teams is Wed., Jan. 19, against McLennan Community College. For more information on the Hill College basketball teams, visit www.hillcollege.edu/athletics/.
