The Hill College Rebels began the 2011 season by winning five straight over North Lake College, Murray State College and Laredo College.
The Rebels hosted North Lake for their season opener and won game one by a final score of 4-1. Mitch Rainer went six strong innings giving up only one run on three hits. Jason Gareri pitched a scoreless seventh to record his first save. The offense was provided by Kyle Turner, Cole Savage, Garret Vail and Brandon Bates. In game two, the Rebels used a nice combination of timely hitting and stellar pitching to defeat North Lake, 8-1. Jose Rivera needed only 64 pitches to get through six innings without allowing an earned run. Mike Washburn hit the first home run of the season for the Rebels, and Kyle Supak pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out two, to complete the game.
Against Murray State, the Rebels allowed three runs in the first inning, but wouldn't allow another run in the final 13! Washburn doubled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 14th inning to defeat the Aggies, 4-3. Kyle Kern got the victory, but Justin Suntych, Rhys Aldehnoven, and Gareri all turned in solid pitching performances. Turner and Brandon once again led the offense with two hits apiece.
On Saturday, the Rebels faced Laredo College in a doubleheader. In game one, the Palominos scored five unearned runs in the top of the first inning due to three Hill College errors, but in the bottom half of the first inning, the Rebels answered with eight runs of their own en route to a 21-7 victory. Marty Bigham relieved starter Zach Krebs and received the victory after pitching four scoreless innings. Jake Allen led the offense as he went two for two with a double, five RBIs, three runs and two walks in his season debut. In game two, the Rebels used a seven-run third inning to win by a final score of 7-2. Benny Suarez pitched five innings without giving up an earned run to receive the victory. Turner, Savage, Vail and Allen along with Chane Lynch and Sean O'Sullivan had hits for the Rebels.
