Hill College Press Division

Established in 1923, Hill College was originally known as Hillsboro Junior College. It is a comprehensive community college. In 1964 the Board of Regents of the college authorized the establishment of the Hill College Press. For many years, under the direction of Colonel Harold B. Simpson, a retired Air Force officer, Hill College Professor of History, and Civil War historian, the press concentrated on publishing books and monographs with titles of history, biography, and selected subjects relating to the Civil War with emphasis on Texans and Texas units that served the Confederacy. After Colonel Simpson's death in 1989, works on other topics were sometimes published at the average rate of one book per yea

In 1997 when funding by the State of Texas helped to create the Texas Heritage Museum at Hill College, the Hill College Press became a part of its operations. Publications continued to focus on historical subjects but with a slightly changed mission, namely to publish titles relating to Texas and Texans during wartime and how those experiences affect society today. In 2009 the range extends to all the wars in which the state and its citizens have been involved and to selected regional topics that have potential for making unique and important contributions to understanding the culture and history of North and Central Texas. To date forty-four titles bear the Hill College Press imprint. Copies of all the titles are displayed in the foyer of the Museum on the campus of Hill College.

For information about the press, published titles in print still available, works in progress, and the submission of manuscripts for consideration, contact Earl Elam, Ph.D., Editor, at 254-659-7754 or e-mail eelam@hillcollege.edu

Vision Statement of the Hill College Press

The current focus of the press is on historical subjects that relate to the mission of the Texas Heritage Museum, namely to explore Texas and Texans during wartime and how those experiences affect us today. Specifically, the range of topics extends to all the wars in which the state and its citizens have been involved and to selected regional topics that have potential for enhancing in unique and important ways understandings of the culture and history of North and Central Texas.
