Hill College’s Dr. Teri Walker Explains How to Make Data Work for Higher Education

04.01.14

HILLSBORO, TX-- Dr. Teri Walker, director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness at Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas, will speak at the South Central Poise Users Group (SCPUG) Conference April 14, in Hot Springs, Ark.  In her presentation, titled Student Success:  One of These Things is Like the Other, Walker will discuss the necessary elements for making technology and data work in higher education, whether at an urban community college district of over 80,000 students; a small, rural college with an enrollment of 4,500; or something in between. These elements include clear data definitions, the ease with which data can be extracted, communication and a compelling story.

Walker’s presentation challenges the notion that higher education institutions are unique and thus, what works at one institution may not work at another. Technology, according to Walker, helps to minimize and even eliminate those differences, making higher education institutions far more alike than different. After all, the challenges colleges and universities face, regardless of size, location, etc. are largely the same: How do we increase enrollment, retention and graduation?

Walker, a former Achieving the Dream data coach, national speaker and current director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness at Hill College, draws upon her in this presentation.  She will be joined by Michael Nguyen, Vice President of Services for ZogoTech, the leading provider of data warehousing and analytics tools for higher education, who will share examples of the successful use of technology and data from some of the 50 colleges and universities ZogoTech has worked with over the last 10 years. The SCPUG Conference will be held April 13-16 in Hot Springs, Ark.
