Hill College Lady Rebels basketball team begins conference season

After 16 pre-season games the Hill College Lady Rebels head into conference play averaging 73.1 points per game, shooting an average of 41 percent from the field, and 33.6 percent from the three-point line. The North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) Pre-Season Coaches’ Poll predicted Hill College to finish fourth in the Conference for the 2017-2018 season behind Collin College, McLennan Community College and Weatherford College.

The Lady Rebels kicked off the spring semester with their first conference game against Cisco College Saturday, Jan. 13 with a 79-58 win. The Lady Rebels are currently 10-7 overall, and 1-0 in conference, with their win against Cisco College. Under the leadership of Head Coach Scott Hyland, the Lady Rebels have gone 8-2 against Cisco College in the past five years. 

“For having a very young team, we are seeing some really good progress. I like where our team is at right now and I’m very excited for the upcoming conference season and our pursuit for a conference championship,” said Hyland.

The Lady Rebels roster consists of 11 freshmen and three sophomores. With sophomore Jamesia Amand and freshman Vania Hampton red shirting this season, 10 freshmen and two sophomores are on floor for the Lady Rebels. Nonetheless, the young Lady Rebels have proven they are contenders. With freshman Alexa Hoy, Miranda Stephens and Kelsey Crouse all being ranked in the top 10 of the NTJCAC in three-point percentage, Hill College is ranked 13th nationally in three-pointers made per game, with 8.3 threes per game. 

Hoy leads the team in points per game averaging 14.9, followed by freshman Stephens with 13.4 points per game. 

Sophomore Arhianna Sims-Jackson is leading the team on the boards with 7.6 rebounds per game and 3.3 blocks per game. Tamia Cunigan, sophomore, is leading the team with assists at 6.9 assists per game. Their presence has ranked Sims-Jackson second in the NTJCAC in rebounds per game with 7.6, second in the NTCJAC and 15th nationally in field goal percentage at 59.3. Cunigan was selected as the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region V Women’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 26- Dec. 2 and is currently ranked third in the nation for assists per game with 6.9. Sims-Jackson was selected as the NJCAA Region V Women’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 7-13.
