Dynamic New York City A Cappella Vocal Ensemble, Backtrack, to close the 2017-2018 Performing Arts Series March 8

The term “backtrack” can have multiple connotations, including to retrace one’s steps or to provide musical accompaniment for a soloist. New York a cappella ensemble Backtrack melds both as they perform arrangements retracing the history of American popular music ranging from early pop and rock songs to the hits of today, with some original material mixed in, and provide their own “backing track” through the art of beatboxing. This award-winning ensemble will bring their internationally renowned sound to the Hill College stage on Thursday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. 

Backtrack is a five-person a cappella group based in New York City that explores the power of the human voice through unique vocal arrangements, tight harmonies and world-class beatboxing. They have performed their unique brand of a cappella vocal music everywhere from private parties and high schools to elite venues such as the historic Beacon Theater, the Apollo Theater and Carnegie Hall. As an ensemble, they have won awards such as the International Championship of A Cappella and Steve Harvey’s Sing Off, in which they took first place. 

While all of the members of Backtrack currently reside in the New York City area and many are from the northeast originally, soprano Mallory Moser is from Fort Worth. Moser, alto Melissa Jordano, tenor Mike Hinkle and bass Andrew John Kim all hold degrees from prestigious universities in a variety of disciplines and have attended professional academies to further their training. Beatboxer Johnny Buffalo took a more organic approach, moving to New York City and becoming part of a community of beatboxers. Beatboxing in the art of using the human voice and body to create a rhythm track. All of the members of the group have won multiple awards on their own in addition to those won by the group. Backtrack is passionate about inspiring and educating the youth of America about a cappella and the performing arts and demonstrates this passion by adjudicating a cappella competitions, showcasing at a cappella festivals and providing workshops to students across the nation. 

Backtrack’s performance will take place in the Governor Bill Daniel Auditorium of the Vara Martin Daniel Performing Arts Center, just behind the Texas Heritage Museum on the Hill County Campus in Hillsboro. The concert is free and open to the public. A reception provided by the Hillsboro Sesame Club will be held immediately afterward.
