Runnin' Rebels Aim to Light Up the Scoreboard
HILLSBORO - The Hill College Runnin’ Rebels are looking to create momentum coming off their first postseason berth since the 2008-09 season. The 2012-13 team finished the season 20-11 and made it to the Region V Tournament in Lubbock. The 2013-14 Runnin’ Rebels look to be more explosive than last year’s team that was 16th in the nation with 84 points per game.
This year’s team has already defeated Panola College (97-71) and Southern University-Shreveport (87-82). The team is led by returning sophomore point guard Tramique Sutherland who is averaging 22 points per game through two games. The First-Team All-Conference guard is also averaging 9.5 rebounds and eight assists per game. Sutherland is from Toronto, Ontario and is committed to Bradley University next season. The other returner from last season is point guard Taylor Luster who is averaging 11 points per game and provides veteran leadership on and off the court.
This year’s team includes three sophomore transfers to provide experience including Stephen F. Austin commit Jared Johnson is averaging 12.5 points per game while Middle Tennessee State commit Xavier Habersham is averaging 13.5 points per game. Georgia native and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville commit, Michael Chandler, leads the team in rebounds with 10.5 per game.
The Runnin' Rebels compete in the NTJCAC which makes up half of Region V. The teams competing for the conference crown include defending conference champion Ranger College along with Temple College and McLennan Community College.
Hill routinely plays one of the most difficult schedules in the country and this season is no different. The schedule includes #4 Hutchinson Community College and #6 Kilgore College comes to Hillsboro November 20.
