Celebrating 23 years of the Hill College Performing Arts Series

In the 1993-94 academic year the Hill College Performing Arts Series presented its first season of concerts on the Hillsboro campus. Phillip Lowe, Coordinator of the Visual and Performing Arts, organized the series with the help of Dr. William Auvenshine and initial seed money from Hill College as well as help from Scotty Cason in enlisting community leader support. From the beginning it was decided that the series would be free to the public and that donations from the public and financial help from Hill College would be our only means of support. From a very modest initial budget of $2,000, support, both financial and in attendance, has grown tenfold in the past twenty four years.

The Performing Arts Series presents four to six programs per year to students, faculty, staff and the community.  These free-admission programs bring outstanding performing artists of all genres to Hillsboro each year and, in addition to the concerts, allows for those in attendance to interact with the artists in the receptions which follow each event.

Backtrack is an a cappella powerhouse located in the one-and-only, New York City. The ensemble proclaims NYC as its playground and muse. Whether a native or a transplant, each member found a home in NYC with Backtrack. The hustle and bustle of the city matches the ensemble's energy, and just like New York, Andrew, Johnny, Melissa, Mallory and Jordan are a melting pot of cultures and heritages. This diversity is evident in Backtrack's sound, where each member brings forth his/her own special element.

Backtrack has taken the stage at venues across the nation, including universities, concert halls, festivals, high schools and private functions. Notable venues include Apollo Theater, Louisville Palace and One World Observatory. Audiences praise Backtrack on its unique, high-energy and interactive performances and applaud the strong musicality and skill of each of the members and the ensemble as a whole.

In addition to performing, Backtrack is passionate about inspiring and educating the youth of America about a cappella and the Performing Arts. Backtrack demonstrates this passion by adjudicating a cappella competitions, such as the Wyvern International A Cappella Festival, showcasing at a cappella festivals, such as the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) and SingStrong NY, and providing workshops to students across the nation.

Since its founding, Backtrack has amassed over 8 million views and 95 thousand subscribers on YouTube. Last year, the group won the 2016 YouTube Next Up competition and was described by Business Insider as one of the “34 up-and-coming YouTube stars you should be watching right now”.
