ITSW 1058. Computers for ESL Students (20hours/$171) 2.0 CEUs

This class takes students with at least a Low Intermediate ESL reading proficiency (as defined by the CASAS Skill Level Descriptors for ESL) through the basics of effectively using a computer to perform tasks. In this course, students will be introduced to the beginning level skills and using computers that run Windows 10. The course will cover basic areas of computer literacy, such as:

  • Common computer-oriented vocabulary
  • Basic computer hardware knowledge
  • Effective use of a computer keyboard and mouse
  • Functional competence in basic tasks such as creating, opening, editing, and printing word-processor documents
  • Competence in filling out computer-based forms
  • Competence in searching the web
  • Competence in sending and receiving email

Introduction to operating systems file creation/deletion, data entry and manipulation, automatic file execution, configuration, and directory commands. The purpose of this course is to provide learners with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively use digital technology and become good digital citizens at school, home, and work. Among others, themes covered include information management (finding, storing, and organizing information), digital communications (email, social media, etc.), understanding and effectively using digital technology (software and devices), and digital citizenry (the norms of appropriate, responsible behavior with regard to technology use).
