Patient Care Technician

The Patient Care Technician is a nationally recognized certification for certified nurse aides with phlebotomy and EKG training. Certified Patient Care Technicians assist doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals in providing direct patient care in a variety of healthcare environments. As a Certified Patient Care Technician, you may perform some or all of the following tasks:

  • Provide basic patient care 
  • Obtain EKG readings
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to take the certification exam for Phlebotomy, EKG, and Patient Care Technician that is offered by the National Healthcare Association (NHA) or American Medical Certification Association (AMCA) and Nurse Aide that is regulated by Texas Health and Human Services through Prometric. 


Phlebotomy Technician Program (120 hours/$698) 12.0 CEUs

Phlebotomy is the practice of obtaining blood for testing purposes. This program is an in-depth study of phlebotomy and the related skills required by the phlebotomist to function in the healthcare setting. Students will complete 120 hours of course and clinical work in order to prepare for the  certification exam through the National Health Career Association (NHA) or American Medical Certification Association (AMCA). This program consists of 72 hours of lecture and 48 hours of clinical activities in a hospital and lab environment. The clinical hours are included in the cost of the program. Students can opt out of clinicals. CPR for Healthcare Providers is required. Students are responsible for textbook(s) and supplies. Registration requirements are located at: www.hillcollege.edu/ce.

**Clinical rotations are typically conducted Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no guarantee of the location that the student will attend. Students may have to travel up to 60 miles one way to a facility for clinical rotation. STUDENTS CAN OPT OUT OF CLINICALS.

Nurse Aide Program (112 Hours/$666) 11.2 CEUs

The Nurse Aide Certificate is a 112-hour program that provides the skills, knowledge and abilities essential to provide basic care to residents of long-term care facilities. Students are also prepared for the state certification exam for certified nurse aide offered by Texas Health and Human Services Department.The program consists of 72 hours of lecture, and 40 hours of clinical activity in a long-term care facility. Upon completion of the program, students will be prepared for entry-level employment in long-term care facilities, doctor’s offices and hospitals. The clinical hours are included in the cost of the program. CPR for Healthcare Providers is required. Students must register in all the classes below upon program entry and are responsible for textbook(s) and supplies. Students must be 18 prior to clinical experience. EKG--ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHY (36 Hours/$253) 3.6 CEUs

The EKG Program is a 36-hour lecture program. Students will learn the fundamentals of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, including basic electrocardiography procedures, interpretation of basic dysrhythmias, and appropriate treatment modalities. Upon completion, students will be able to describe the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system, perform basic electrocardiography procedures, and interpret basic dysrhythmias. Students will also be prepared to take the certification exam offered by the National Healthcare Association (NHA) or American Medical Certification Association (AMCA). CPR for Healthcare Providers is required.
