Runnin’ Rebels Head to Regional Tournament


The Hill College Runnin’ Rebel basketball team completed their regular season with a 20-10 overall record and 8-4 in conference play. Hill will represent the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) as the No. 2 seed in the Region V Tournament March 7-9 at Lubbock Christian University in Lubbock, Tex.

The tournament pits the top four NTJCAC finishers with the top four from the Western Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (WTJCAC). It is a single elimination tournament with the winner advancing to the National Tournament March 18-23, in Hutchinson, Kan. 

As the No. 2 seed, Hill will take on the No. 3 seed from the WTJCAC, Odessa College at noon on Thursday, March 7.

“We feel good about our chances in this tournament,” Head Coach Swede Trenkle said. “We’ve played one of the toughest schedules in the nation which has helped us prepare mentally for Lubbock.”                        

The Runnin’ Rebels are led in scoring by freshman Javonte Douglas with 16.3 points per game. Douglas also averages 6.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. Other key contributors include sophomore Andrew Guillory averages 13.7 points, four rebounds, three assists per game and leads the team in three-point percentage at 42.5%. Freshman point guard Tramique Sutherland is the team’s stat-sheet stuffer as he averages 10.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 2.3 steals per game. Freshman PJ Lockridge is the team’s leading rebounder with 7.6 per game and also averages 11.6 points per game.

Six Runnin’ Rebels were named to the NTJCAC All-Conference team including Douglas being named Most Valuable Player and First Team All-Conference. Guillory and Sutherland also received First Team recognition while Lockridge was named to the Second Team. Sophomore Tevin Holmes and freshman Marcus Burwell received honorable mention.
