Hill College Student Selected to All-State Band
Olivia Santos, a student from Hill College in Hillsboro, has been invited to perform at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio as part of the All-State Symphonic Band. The concert will be on Feb. 13, at 5:30 p.m. at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center and is free and open to the public.
Santos, a freshman music major and graduate of Joshua High School in Joshua, Texas, will join other students selected for the Texas Community College Band Directors Association (TCCBDA) All-State Band from Feb. 10-13. She studies horn with Phillip Lowe, Coordinator of Visual and Performing Arts, who states “She is one of the finest horn players I’ve had the pleasure to work with at Hill College.” Olivia was also selected as a member of the 4A TMEA All-State Band from Joshua High School in 2011.
Several hundred community college band students audition each year by recording two etudes. An anonymous five-person panel judges the submissions and selects the best musicians for the band.
In addition to being afforded the opportunity to attend one of the largest and most comprehensive music education clinic/conventions in the country, students will participate in rehearsals with their clinicians, culminating in a concert on Saturday.
“We are very proud of Olivia for being selected for this prestigious group,” Hill College Director of Bands Steve Hart said. “She has worked extremely hard in preparing for the auditions, and will be a wonderful representative for Hill College at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio.”
