Hill College Automotive Program To Offer Night Classes This Fall

Persons interested in learning automotive technician skills will have additional training options this fall, as Hill College will be offering evening classes in this growing field.

            Automotive Electrical Systems (AUMT 1407) will be taught Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 9:20 p.m. Automotive Brake Systems (AUMT 1410) will be taught Tuesdays and Thursdays at the same time.

            Students who take these two courses this fall can receive a Basic Automotive Repair certificate by taking Intro and Theory of Automotive Technology (AUMT 1301) and Automotive Engine Repair (AUMT 1419) in the spring. AUMT 1301 is an online course that is offered every semester.

            Automotive technicians are in demand in the Central/North Texas area. Both the Heart of Texas and North Central Texas Workforce Solutions Board have the field listed as a targeted occupation. Nationally, automotive technician jobs are expected to grow nine percent from 2012 to 2022. The U.S. Department of Labor characterizes the job market as “very good.”

            The evening classes are also a good opportunity for persons who want to expand their knowledge for personal reasons, said Automotive Technology Coordinator Jerry Hampton. “Since automobiles are becoming increasingly sophisticated, working on one’s own vehicle or being able to converse with professional technicians about your vehicle requires increased knowledge,” he said.

            Classes are held at the college’s state-of-the-art Snap-On Center, located in downtown Cleburne. The center features the use of sophisticated Snap-On diagnostic tools, providing students the skills to work on complex vehicles and to receive nationally recognized certifications. Hill College offers a variety of certificates through its automotive technology program, as well as the associate of applied science.
