Clinical Medical Assistant Program Offered at Hill College

10.30.14

CLEBURNE - The Community and Workforce Education Department at Hill College is proud to announce a new Health Career program offering – Clinical Medical Assistant.

The Clinical Medical Assistant Course will start on January 23rd through June 6th. Classes will run from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.  The cost of the program is $1200.

This comprehensive program consists of 198-hours of class study and 160-hours of clinical externship. Students are expected to develop the necessary skills needed to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office.  Typical responsibilities include preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle.  Hands-on clinical externship is done with local healthcare providers. To be eligible for the clinical rotation, students must successfully complete the 198-hour program, submit to a thorough background check, drug screening and meet other requirements. Upon successful completion of this program, students would be eligible to sit for the National Health Career Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national examination.

Employment of medical assistants is projected to grow 29 percent over the next 10 years, much faster than the average for all occupations.  Additional demand also is expected because of new and changing tasks for medical assistants as part of the medical team. As more and more physicians’ practices switch to electronic health records (EHRs), medical assistants’ job responsibilities will continue to change. Assistants will need to become familiar with EHR computer software, including maintaining EHR security and analyzing electronic data, to improve healthcare information.
