Hill College to host annual home rodeo March 23-24 in Hillsboro

Hill College will host the 33rd annual collegiate rodeo Friday and Saturday, March 23 and 24, at the Hill College Rodeo Grounds at 206 HCR 3108 in Hillsboro. Admission is $5 per person at the gate, and children under 10 are free.

The rodeo showcases over 350 young men and women at the college level from across the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) Southern Region.         

Friday, slack will start at 10 a.m., with a performance to follow at 7:30 p.m. Saturday slack will start at 9 a.m., and there will be an afternoon performance at 2 p.m. The college rodeo events include bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping, breakaway roping, goat tying, barrel racing and bull riding.

Schools competing at the rodeo include: Texas A&M University, Sam Houston State University, McNeese State University, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Louisiana State University-Alexandria, Stephen F. Austin State University, Northeast Texas Community College, Panola College, Wharton County Junior College, Southwest Texas Junior College, Trinity Valley Community College and Hill College.

The Hill College men’s team is currently second in the men’s team standings with 2,633.33 points behind Panola Junior College with 2,753.83. The spring rodeo season kicks off this weekend Feb. 9-10 at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens. Feb. 23-24 they will compete at Texas A&M Kingsville. March 16-17 they will compete at Texas A&M University in Bryan and the season will end April 20-21 at Wharton County Junior College. 

The top two men’s and women’s teams and top three individuals from each region will qualify to compete at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in Casper, Wyo., in June.
