The schedule of performers for the 2018-19 Hill College Phillip H. Lowe Performing Arts Series has been announced. Performers will include: University of Texas at Arlington Jazz Faculty, The Paul Brock Band and the Rastrelli Cello Quartet. The Performing Arts Series will present these three programs to students, faculty, staff and the community in the Vara Martin Daniel Performing Arts Center on the Hill County Campus in Hillsboro. These performances are free-admission and open to the public.
The UT-Arlington Faculty ensemble organized by Tim Ishii, associate professor of music and coordinator of jazz studies, will be performing at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 2, 2018. Tim Ishii maintains a busy freelance schedule and has performed with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and Texas Wind Symphony. He has backed numerous artists including: Natalie Cole, Temptations, Doc Severinson, Clark Terry, James Moody, Slide Hampton, Bob Mintzer and many others.
The first international act coming to the Series is a returning act from a few years ago, the Paul Brock Band. Button accordion and melodeon player, Paul Brock, is a multiple All-Ireland champion from Athlone, County Westmeath, now residing in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland. Brock’s solo album, Mo Charidin (Gael-Linn), is described by the Rough Guide to Irish Music as “a masterpiece of accordion playing.” The Paul Brock Band performs Thursday, Oct. 25, 2018, at 7 p.m. You can visit the Paul Brock Band website at www.paulbrockband.com.
The second international act is the Rastrelli Cello Quartet. A singularly unique ensemble, the Rastrelli Cello Quartet has been thrilling audiences with their renderings of non-traditional programming since 2002. Kira Kraftzoff – artistic director, Krillill Timofeev, Misha Degtjareff and Sergio Drabkin formed the ensemble with a mission to perform music “between the genres,” and their widely varied programs comfortably mix works by Bach, Saint-Saëns and Tchaikovsky with the music stylings of George Gershwin, Dave Brubeck and Leroy Anderson. The name of the Rastrelli Cello Quartet is taken from the 18th century architect Bartholomew Rastelli, who designed the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the home of three of the four Rastrelli Cello Quartet members. The Rastrelli Cello Quartet performs Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at 7 p.m. You can visit the Rastrelli Cello Quartet website at www.rastrelli.de/en/.
