Phillip Lowe, former Hill College coordinator of visual and performing arts, has received the 5th annual Jesse Jones Leadership Award from the North Texas Community College Consortium (NTCCC). The award was presented during NTCCC’s annual fall leadership conference Sept. 14 at Brookhaven College.

Recipients are nominated by NTCCC board members in recognition of contributions made to his or her college and/or the Consortium in outstanding leadership; dedicated service; and excellence in communication, cooperation and collaboration.

“I am so excited that Phillip is the recipient of the Jesse Jones Leadership Award. I can’t think of anyone more deserving,” said Hill College President Dr. Pam Boehm. “Phillip has dedicated his life’s work to education and preparing students for careers in the music and teaching professions. He has exemplified true leadership through his work as an instructor, as well as program coordinator. It is my pleasure to call him a friend and colleague, and I congratulate him on his accomplishment.”

“I’m tremendously honored to receive the Jesse Jones Leadership award from the North Texas Community College Consortium. I’ve been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with so many wonderful students, faculty, staff and administration through my years at Hill College. I am also very grateful to Dr. Boehm for nominating me for this award,” said Lowe.

Lowe retired in May after 43 years of service at Hill College. He was the director of bands for 38 years, founder of the Hill College Hood’s Texas Brigade Brass Band in 1982, music instructor, coordinator of visual & performing arts, and administrator of the Hill College Performing Arts Series and the Alden J. Blanar Smith Speaker Series.

The Speaker Series, which began in 2009, has included Astronaut Story Musgrave, Judge Kenneth Winston Starr, Representative Chet Edwards, Texas Rangers radio voice Eric Nadel, Olympic Champion Bob Richards and Chet Garner of the Daytripper.

In 1993, Lowe began The Performing Arts Series at Hill College. The Series presents four to six programs per year to students, faculty, staff, and the community. These free-admission programs bring outstanding performing artists of all genres to Hillsboro each year and, in addition to the concerts, allows for those in attendance to interact with the artists at the receptions which follow each event. At the final performance of the 2017-18 Series, Hill College President Dr. Pam Boehm recognized Lowe’s achievements and named the Series the Phillip H. Lowe Performing Arts Series.

Lowe was the Minnie Stevens Piper Award nominee for Hill College in 2012, has been a member of the Texas Community College Teachers Association for the past 43 years, a member of the Texas Association of Music Schools for over 30 years and was selected and served on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Music Field of Study Advisory Committee 2015-17.
