The Hill College Lady Rebels opened the season with a convincing 79-42 win over Jacksonville College Friday, Nov. 1. Four Lady Rebels hit double figures led by Emily Cunningham, sophomore of Milford, with 15 points. Brianna Pena, sophomore of Weslaco, and Andreea Mancha, freshmen of Alvin, and Kertisa Amos, freshman post guard of Burleson, all had 11.

The Rebels started the game with a 12-1 run to take the early lead. A Pena basket and a free throw by Sydney Nunley, freshman of Keller, ended the third quarter with the Rebels up 21-9. Hill started the second quarter with a 13-0 run behind five points from Pena and four from Amos to open the lead up to 34-9.

Jacksonville would come out and cut the Rebel lead to 19 a couple of times, the second occurring after two made free throws made it 45-26 with 5:50 left to play in the third quarter. However, those would be the last points of the quarter for the visiting Jaguars as the Rebels would finish the period with an 11-0 run led by five points by Cunningham. The Rebels would push the lead to as much as 40 points late in the game behind four three-point field goals by four different players.

Hill’s aggressive defensive play held the Jaguars to 25 percent shooting while forcing 30 turnovers. The hometown Lady Rebels dominated the boards holding a 50-36 rebounding advantage led by three freshmen, Destanee Roblow, of Teague, with nine, and Amos and Ayana Segrest, of Lubbock, each with seven. Hill returns to action with a road game Tuesday at Bossier Parrish and will be at home Saturday, Nov. 9, against Cedar Valley. Game time is 11 a.m. at the Hill County Campus, Bob Bullock Sports Center in Hillsboro.
