Hill College Women’s Basketball Signs Four Athletes to Four-Year Universities

HILLSBORO, TEXAS— Hill College Women’s Basketball signs four athletes to four-year universities to finish out their collegiate athletic careers. Coach Scott Hyland has been the women’s basketball coach since 2012 and celebrated 150 wins while at Hill College in 2020. Hyland has produced quality athletes and has been successful in getting his athletes secured with solid basketball programs at various universities. Hyland is assisted by Rachel Jones, who was named 2020 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year. Congratulations to this year’s sophomores who have recently signed.

Brianna Pena, a sophomore from Weslaco, Texas will be signing a letter of intent with Texas A&M University–Kingsville (TAMUK). TAMUK is an NCAA Division II program. Pena led the Lady Rebels in scoring this season, averaging 11.9-points while shooting a team-best 48.4% from the field. Pena’s efforts led to her being named to the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference All-Conference Team. Pena has left her mark on the Hill College record books finishing her career #1 all-time in field goals with 230, sixth all-time in scoring with 576 points, #10 in steals with 91, and 15th in 3-point field goals with 49. Pena is a two-time NTJCAC All-Academic Team award winner and was a 2018-19 NJCAA Academic All-American.

Sydney Nunley will be signing with Loyola University of New Orleans. The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) program was 21-7 this past season. Nunley had a strong season after sitting out last year due to injury.  She was second on the team in scoring, averaging 9.4 points per game and led the team in steals with 2.3 per game. She was also named to the NTJCAC All-Conference Team.

Vania Hampton has committed to Sul Ross University, an NCAA Division III program in Alpine, Texas. Hampton averaged 3.3 points and 2.6 rebounds on the season. However, she shot 48.8% from the field and 37.5% from the 3-point line during conference play in helping the Lady Rebels to their sixth consecutive Region V Tournament appearance. 

Emily Cunningham signed with Tarleton State in November during the NCAA’s early signing period. Cunningham averaged 7.3 points and 3.0 rebounds a game this season while knocking down 40 3-point field goals, the second-most for the Lady Rebels on the season. Cunningham was named Honorable Mention All-Conference for her efforts. The sharpshooter from Milford, TX finishes her career at Hill with 451 points, good for 14th all-time in the program's history, 108 3-point field goals (3rd all-time), and 32 blocked shots (8th all-time). Cunningham was also named to the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. Tarleton State is transitioning to the NCAA Division I level.
