Hill College sophomore wins All-Around competition at Texas A&M – Commerce Rodeo

Hill College sophomore Parker Fleet (Axtell) earned enough total points to win the All-Around competition while teammate Mason Vaculin (freshman from Cameron) ended up as the reserve All-Around Champion at the Texas A&M University - Commerce Rodeo Feb. 3-4 in Sulphur Springs.

The overall results from the event kept the Hill College men’s rodeo team in close contention for a Southern Regional Championship as several cowboys – and one cowgirl – placed at the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association sanctioned event.

parker_fleetSophomore Parker Fleet (Axtell) earned enough total points to win the All-Around competition while teammate Mason Vaculin (freshman from Cameron) ended up as the reserve All-Around Champion.

Fleet dominated the saddle bronc winning the long round (84 points), short round (85 points), and average (169 points on two). He also came back 9th in the team roping with partner Todd Sells (a sophomore from Arizona) with an 8.4 and was 6th in the short round (20.8 - barrier) and 6th in the average (29.0).mason_vaculin

Vaculin was 14.0 on his first calf, and came back to the short round with a 17.3 where he ended up 6th. He also finished 6th in the average. Also, Vaculin and his partner, Cooper Parsley of Panola College, finished with a 6.5 in the long round ending up 5th, but had a little trouble in the short round.

In other action, freshman Coy Hebert from Louisiana came back 4th in the long round (76 points) but missed his horse out in the short round taking him out of the average.

Sophomore JB Collins (Rosenburg) won 3rd in the long round of the calf roping with a 10.7 but ended up missing in the short round after fighting an illness. Teammate Brice Meyers (sophomore from Grandview) also came back 8th in the calf roping but broke out in the short round.

Colton Payne (freshman from Franklin) and partner Dylan Hoffman of Sam Houston State University (former Rebel) came back 7th in the team roping with a 7.8. Also, they were 15.2 in the short round (barrier) ending up 5th and placed 5th in the average (23.0 on two).

In steer wrestling, sophomore Cole Walker (Springtown) won the long round with a blistering 4.0. He also threw his short round steer in 5.7 which placed him third in the average (9.7 on two).

Freshman Makenzie Dowell (Marlin) was the only female from Hill College who placed at the event. She was a 6.5 in the long round of the goat tying event (her personnel best) which split 3rd. She also tied a 7.1 in the short round splitting 4th making her a 13.6 on two which was split 4th in the average.

Hill College Rodeo Coach Paul Brown said the men’s team is still in a close battle for the regional championship with four rodeos remaining – Texas A&M University (March 10-11), Wharton County Junior College Rodeo (March 24-25), Hill College Rodeo (March 31-April 1), and Trinity Valley Community College Rodeo (April 21-22).
