Hill College President Dr. Thomas Mills and the Board of Regents have spent the past year and a half securing resources to upgrade and/or enhance its athletic facilities around the Hillsboro campus.
The purpose of these ongoing facility improvements complements the college’s new mission to be “a beacon of excellence in teaching, learning, and innovation that improves lives and drives economic sustainability.”
The initiative to move forward with these athletic enhancements began a few years ago with the expansion of the soccer practice field as well as additions to the baseball field such as improving the grandstand area, replacing both dugouts, and adding air conditioning inside the indoor batting cages.
“The air conditioning was actually donated to us by a former student-athlete,” Head Baseball Coach Chris Rateike said.
Arguably the two largest facility improvements happened this summer at the Bob Bullock Sports Center and Hill College Softball Field.
The Bob Bullock Sports Center received major renovations including new flooring throughout the building, new locker rooms, new scoreboards, and a new paint job. The softball field was completely overhauled to include a synthetic turf playing surface, a new covered grandstand area, a new storage/hitting facility and, for the first time in the school’s history, LED lighting for night games.
Other notable facility improvements included new locker rooms for men’s and women’s soccer and moving the baseball visitors’ bullpen to outside the field of play.
