Governor Greg Abbott announced last week that Hill College is the recipient of one of 60 career training grants awarded to Texas higher education institutions and school districts.

The college received a $260,870 grant to train 96 students as heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers through its new truck driving academy.

The Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grant is awarded through the Texas Workforce Commission to help schools buy equipment for career and technical education (CTE) programs that help students across the state go into high-demand industries.

"Hill College is humbled and thrilled to receive this JET grant as we are partnering with our industry partners to launch our Hill College-Frontier Support Logistics (FSL) Truck Driving Academy, consisting of a CDL program and a Heavy Haul Safety Program," said Vice President of Student Learning and Success Irene Accomando.

"This partnership will allow us to train students to be skilled truck drivers and meet the employment demands for our local, regional and state need for truck drivers."

Announcing 2024 JET grant recipients, Governor Abbott said that as Texas’ economy continues to grow, it is critical that it invests in the future workforce.

“This $15 million in career training grants will support career and technical training programs for thousands of Texas students across our great state," said Abbott.

"I thank the Texas Workforce Commission for their continued partnership with Texas’ high schools, colleges and universities to help students achieve high-demand, good-paying jobs after graduation. The work being done at the Texas Workforce Commission and in our educational institutions across Texas ensures Texans have opportunities that lead to a better job and a bigger paycheck.”
