This August, biology instructor Paula Curbo retired after 40 years of teaching at Hill College. She began her career as a high school science teacher prior to joining the college in 1985.

“I was blessed to be a part of the Hill College family for 40 years. I was passionate about the courses I taught. I enjoyed getting to know my students and was glad to be a part of their career goals,” said Curbo.

Paula started at Hill College as a part-time biology and chemistry lab instructor. She spent 10 years in that position before becoming a full-time biology instructor, where she served for 30 years.

“Paula Curbo was the heart of our biology program, a dedicated teacher, an inspiring mentor, and a cherished colleague. With her remarkable dedication, Paula shaped our biology program and touched countless lives as a teacher, mentor, and friend. Her unwavering dedication as an educator left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege to work with her. Paula inspired us all to be our best,” said Dr. Alisa Carter, dean of the STEM Pathway.

When asked about some of the more memorable moments of her career, she stated “There are too many to highlight.”

She credits Bob Treadwell, who was the division director of life and physical sciences at the time, for inspiring her. “Mr. Treadwell’s support, advice, and encouragement were invaluable.”

Paula is married to Billy Don Curbo, who also retired this August after serving in various administration roles at the college for over 40 years. They met at Abilene Christian University and married in 1980. Billy Don was already working at the college and the two moved into the Bailey Residence Hall as dorm parents in the summer of 1980.

“I will miss the Hill College family and the students. I will miss my colleagues in the biology department as well as those I would see in the hallway.”
